I graduated from the University of Florida with a BFA and have also done
graduate course work in user interface design at Tufts University.
I became an information designer in 1993 after having been a cartographer
and graphic designer for government agencies and an illustrator for textbook
publishers and magazines. I generally work as a contractor but have also been an
employee of Scansoft (now Nuance) as a visual designer/interface designer for
the company’s software products.
I find information design to be the most rewarding form of design because
it is a cross disciplinary endeavor that uses my skills from different areas of my
experience. As a cartographer, I learned to parse visual hierarchies, to articulate
complex networks and organize space. As an illustrator, I learned clarity of
resolution and precise delineation of visual components. As a graphic designer, I
have explored the possiblities of color and the intricacies of type. I have found
that human interaction in web applications can be designed using cartographic skills.
Flash, a new skill, allows me to animate images in a way that enhances data and
makes it compelling.
